The UN special envoy on Syria arrives in Damascus to discuss the establishment of a Committee to draft the Constitution

Special envoy of the UN Secretary General on Syria Staffan de Mistura on Wednesday, will arrive in Damascus to convince the Syrian government to agree to the establishment of a Committee drafting a new Constitution for the post-war period, Western media reported with reference to the representative of the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq.

According to him, Staffan de Mistura, will remain in Damascus “for a couple of days.” He did not specify who exactly will be negotiating, and whether the special envoy to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

According to the media, most Western countries are convinced of the need to end the war in Syria and a political settlement to convene a special Committee who will draft a new Constitution, presidential elections will be held.

At the same time in Damascus criticized the proposed UN Commission’s draft.

Staffan de Mistura had previously announced his intention to resign from the post of UN special envoy for Syria at the end of November.
