Turkey is trying to erase Kurdish history in ‘ Afrīn

Local Council Afrin, created under the auspices of the Turkish authorities, changed Kurdish names town squares, calling one of them in honor of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to local residents yesterday the three main squares of the city were blocked by trucks at the time, as utility workers changed signs and road signs.

The area of the Cava, named after a Kurdish hero Kawa the Blacksmith, was renamed the area the “Olive of anger”, commemorating the occupation of the operation of the Turkish army and the formation of “Free Syrian army” (FSA) in the Canton of Afrin.

Quarter of Nevruz, which received its name in honor of the celebration of the Kurdish New year, has changed its name to Salah al-DIN al-Ayoubi. Finally, the area of al-Sarai was renamed the area of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In recent months the situation in Afrin extremely deteriorated due to factional fighting by rival armed groups. International organization Amnesty International accused Turkish authorities of human rights violations in ‘ Afrīn from the members of the “Free Syrian army” (FSA), supported by Ankara. The study confirmed the facts of systematic violations, including arbitrary detentions, abductions, confiscation of property and looting.
