According to insiders, Viktor Medvedchuk plays an important backstage role of mediator in the negotiation process of the opposition to nominate single presidential candidate
This is referred to in the material for the Atlantic Council of the Ukrainian journalist Mykola Vorobyov, former scholarship holder of the Austrian Fund of the Marshall Plan at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
According to the journalist, Medvedchuk does not hide his ambitions to return to Ukrainian politics.
“At the end of July he joined the Pro-Russian political party “For life”, which currently has relatively high ratings. According to the survey conducted by KIIS in March, it received support from 10.3 percent of the vote, putting it in fourth place,” — said Vorobyov.
Citing its sources, he reported on an important backstage role of Medvedchuk.
“Pro-Russian candidates are trying to agree on a single candidate, but insiders say that Medvedchuk is the mediator in this,” — said the journalist.
He also recalled that “in 2011, was founded by Medvedchuk “the Ukrainian choice”, the Pro-Russian civil movement and political party,” whose members “advocated the transformation of Ukraine into a Federation, and the legalization of dual citizenship and the strengthening of economic relations of Ukraine with Russia.”
“After the annexation of Crimea by Russia and invasion of the Donbass Medvedchuk was one of the first who fell under the sanctions of the U.S. Treasury Department because of its Pro-Kremlin position. However, in February 2015 after signing of the Ukraine, France, Germany and Russia of the agreement on cease-fire Medvedchuk became the intermediary on humanitarian issues of Ukraine”, — stated in the article.
The Atlantic Council also draws attention to the fact that throughout his career Medvedchuk has never denied his Pro-Russian sentiments and close relations with the Kremlin.
“In a recent interview with Deutsche Welle he is, in fact, stressed that “uses his personal relationship with [President Vladimir] Putin in the interests of Ukraine”. In 2004, Putin became the godfather of Medvedchuk’s daughter Daria,” — says the Atlantic Council.
“A significant step” refers to the author of the article reported that “associates of Medvedchuk in August-2108 bought the channel “112”.
“25 Aug Medvedchuk became the object of a hour and a half interview on the new television show on the channel “a Great interview with a great politician,” where he stressed the importance of normalizing relations with Russia,” writes the Atlantic Council.
